Jetting off to a tropical island is most one of the most dreamed-about vacations. Being pampered on an island resort, drinking margaritas, and relaxing around the bonfire in the evening can soothe the soul of even the most weary worker. In today’s economy, though, expensive trips to exotic beaches are being traded in for staying at home. But it doesn’t have to be dull and boring.
One way to get you and your friends out of the tight budget blues is to host a tropical-themed party. You can recreate a Caribbean island resort in your living room for very little outlay of cash and be guaranteed that it will be a party your friends remember for a long time.
First, decide on your theme. You can have a Hawaiian, Jamaican, or South Seas feel to your party, for example. A Hawaiian party might include leis, hula skirts (for the brave), and roast pork and pineapple for dinner. Jamaican parties would have some reggae playing and serve spicy jerk chicken with rice. Your theme will set the tone for your decorations. You can be as elaborate or as sparse as you like with the décor. As long as you have a few items that give the feeling of the theme, your guests’ imagination will take it from there.
Next, decide on what to do at the party. Most tropical parties will include exotic drinks. Make some notes from a good bartending book if you aren’t sure how to make mixed drinks. Pina Coladas, Mai Tais, Margaritas, and Mojitos all have a beach-like taste. Be sure to have non-alcoholic versions on hand for those who don’t drink.
One great way to ensure that your guests remember your party is to serve them their drinks in custom engraved glassware. You can have your custom artwork and any lettering incorporated into the design. For example, you can have the date of the party and its theme engraved on one side of the glass and each guest’s name on the other. GlassWithATwist.com is an online engraver of quality barware. They do not charge a set up or design fee so you can have a separate design for each guest if you like. Depending on the drinks you are serving, you could choose margarita glasses or hurricane glasses for the tropical feel.
The food for the evening should suggest the country that you are all “traveling” to. Your local library will carry many great ethnic cookbooks to give you an idea of what is common and tasty in that country. Make sure that you do not get carried away with the food, however, as you don’t want to spend the entire party in the kitchen.
The most important thing to remember is that the party is about getting together and relaxing with friends. It should be casual and fun and uniquely you.
